Lecture 01: Introduction

My notes on Brandon Sanderson 2020 Creative Writing Lectures at BYU

two general types of writer

  • gardener/discovery writer - likes to explore and write without a plan, see where it goes linearly
  • outliner - makes a detailed plan for the entire book , then writes linearly in small scoped sections

Generally, outliners will spend 70% (i made this up idk) of the time planning and then write the whole book in a massive sprint at the end

Gardeners on the other hand will write consistently everyday churning through the book sequentially.

Hybrids can exist, notably: outliners acts as gardeners in smaller scopes when writing the sections they have planned
